What Is Conscious Interior Design and Why It Matters
/Maybe it was my years as a Girl Scout, or perhaps it's just that I'm empathetic. Either way, I have always known I wanted to impact the world around me positively. When I stepped into Interior Design, it seemed even easier to do that when companies started to release environmentally friendly design products. I remember wanting to design everything using those unique materials with the green certifications. It really felt like using them was the equivalent of saving the rainforest. As I progressed in my career, I learned that we could create conscious, sustainable homes in various ways.
Conscious design means my design process and decisions consider the long-term and unintended consequences of my work. Beyond choosing products that are energy-efficient or made from recycled materials, I am thinking about how long you will have this piece and whether or not it could end up in a landfill somewhere. I'm also considering whether the materials used to create the product are potentially toxic to my clients (think of that new carpet or paint smell, that's called off-gassing). And the process reaches even further than that. I regularly research products and companies to prioritize fair trade, eco-friendly, and sustainable products whenever possible. I consider options to upcycle furniture and buy locally to reduce shipping waste and gas-consumption and stimulate the local economy. And because I believe that conscious design includes making a healthy impact physically, mentally, and spiritually I like to support female and minority business owners and independent artists.
In today's world, we have more options than ever to create a beautiful home. Why not do it consciously?!
