My Favorites: Himalayan Salt Lamps

Oh my god you guys, I LOVE this Himalayan Salt Lamp trend. I own one and if you know me personally there’s a good chance that I’ve tried to convince you to get one too. I don’t own stock in these things but I should really rethink that…

I didn’t know why they were so good for you but I knew I loved them and I’ve been low key obsessed since my trip to the Asheville Salt Cave in NC and it turns out these things pack a serious wellness punch.

Himalayan Salt is that gorgeous pink salt that comes primarily from the Pakistani region of the Himalayan Mountain range. The lamps are just large, hollowed-out salt rocks with a light bulb and base and they come in a range of sizes and shapes.

It’s basically an air purifier. The warm salt lamp attracts water molecules in the air drawing in the allergens, pollutants, and bacteria held in the water molecules thereby purifying the air. Take THAT, allergens!

They produce negative ions. Ever wonder why you feel so peaceful when you take a walk in the woods or sit by the ocean? It’s the negative ions (and being out of the office…) which improve the flow of oxygen to the brain. Okay, okay - I know. Plugging one of these trendy little lamps in isn’t going to give you the same level of negative ions as a walk in a state park but it’s a step up from nothing.

They’re so cute. I mean, they are!

Salt Caves are the hottest new spa trend. I’ve been to both the Asheville and Bethesda Salt Caves where you can purchase a 45 minute session to meditate comfortably in a custom-built salt cave. The walls and ceiling are lined with imported chunks of Himalayan salt while the floor is covered with a layer of finely ground, sand-like salt grains. You enter the cave in a pair of clean socks and take a seat on one of the reclining lounge chairs or meditation pillows where you’ll drift away to the sounds of soothing music. The experience is so satisfying that you’ll want to take a little piece of it home with you.

My mom gave me my salt lamp for Christmas two years ago and I love it. I appreciate the health benefits and just the sight of it feels like a little bit of self-care. I keep it plugged into a switched outlet for ease of use and it sits on the side table next to my favorite spot of the sofa. After a busy day at work I love settling in next to my salt lamp to watch my favorite shows, Stranger Things anyone?! Have a great week, buy a salt lamp, and get outside once in a while.
