How To Mix Throw Pillows

I freakin’ love throw pillows! They’re like the jewelry of your room. When I’m shopping I naturally gravitate to the pillow isle. I have to look at all the pretty colors and embellishments, to touch the fabrics and squish the filler. I love them…

And today, I’m going to tell you how to mix and match throw pillows to get the best, high design results.

  • First off, limit yourself. I stick with the rule of 3 in design. So no more than 3 pillows in a grouping. This is the most effective way to get a balanced look and it limits the amount of pillows you’re peeling off the bed or sofa.

  • Whenever possible use a combination of sizes. I find the most attractive groupings include at least one small pillow if not a small, medium and large.

  • Balance a bold pattern with a solid color and a neutral. In this grouping I’ve selected a small pillow in a bold pattern and balanced it with a solid pillow in dusty rose (bonus points if you get the interesting stitching like this one) and a neutral in a complimentary geometric pattern. I’ll be doing another post on mixing patterns in the future, stay tuned!

I really like this combination. It’s a modern nod to art deco and I love that this look is coming back. As we usher in the “roaring 20’s’ this New Year I expect to be seeing more throwbacks to the Gilded Age. If you’re loving this combo too, I’ve included the links below for easy shopping.

Don’t forget, if you’re having trouble mixing and matching your own throw pillows or accessories, I’m here to help! Snag some time with me here.
