Friday Favorites

April 2nd, 2021

TGIF, everybody!

I hope you’re enjoying as much sunshine as I am this morning. I’m so ready to head into the holiday weekend, but before I do, I wanted to leave you with some Design Trends that will not be resurrected in 2021. That’s right, everything on this list is old news in the Design world. So read up before you add to the cart!

  1. First up, the Modern Farmhouse trend. This may sound weird because you still see products all over the place. But consider this, by the time big box stores like Target get ahold of a trend, you can be assured it’s already done and over within the Design community. And if you’re looking to sell your existing “farmhouse,” things like sliding barn doors are a liability now since potential buyers will be pricing how to replace it with a normal door.

  2. And if you needed further reinforcement after #1, Shiplap is out. Cancel your weekend DIY plans.

  3. Open Shelving can go too. This was always a tricky one to pull off, especially in a kitchen. Look, I know open shelving, and open cabinetry is a cool look in print, but rarely can the average homeowner afford to give up that kind of cabinet real estate. Plus, accessorizing these show spaces is very tricky and usually requires an expert eye. Unless you live in a Home Goods, leave this one to the experts.

  4. Marie Kondo and the life-changing magic of minimalism. Apparently, neither one of these trends “sparks joy” in 2021.

  5. Open concept plans are now a thing of the past. Thanks to the pandemic, people appreciate individual spaces again, presumably the kind with doors.

  6. And finally, no more cheap, mass-produced furniture. Sorry, Ikea. The emerging trend is vintage furniture. The low quality of “fast furniture” makes it less likely to span the decades and more likely to end up in a landfill somewhere - something the Millennial generation does not support.

And on that note, I am off to celebrate a beautiful holiday weekend with the family. I hope you have a great one too!
