How To Get a Professionally-Designed Room On Any Budget
/I firmly believe that everyone should have a comfortable, beautiful home that supports them. And as a designer, I know that this doesn't have to come at great expense. A little creativity and few bucks can take you pretty far. Don't believe me?! Just search #zerodollarupdate on any social media platform, and you'll be hit with a barrage of fantastic before and after photos by creative homeowners.
But I'm a realist too. I know that not everyone is creative. Not everyone has the means or wants to spend a lot of money on design. But I also believe that everyone could benefit from a designer's expertise.
Today, I'm spilling the tea on how to get a professionally designed space within your budget. Grab your notebook and a pencil, kids. School is now in session!
If you're redecorating your space, you will be splitting your budget between furniture, accessories, materials, and finishes (flooring, paint, curtains, wallpaper, etc.), labor for installation, and design fees. Your money needs to go a long way! That said, I have a solution for every budget that will net you a professionally designed space that you will be proud to call your own. Check it out.
Up to $1,000. In the design world, this is considered a tight budget. Especially if you're designing from the ground up, meaning you need help picking a style, finding products, planning your floor plan, etc. My advice to homeowners is to know your design style and shop for related ready-made design packages. Prepared by a professional designer or decorator, most packages cost around $100 and typically include a mood board, a proposed floor plan, and a shopping list. You will have control over your shopping experience and capitalize on sales, gift cards, or comparable products within your price range and style.
$1,000-$5,000. In this price range, I advise homeowners to select an eDesign package for personalized space. An eDesign package is a fully custom design created for you based on your style and budget. Designers and decorators usually provide a mood board (to propose a design style), a floor plan, renderings, a final shopping list, and include time to revise the plan at least once to meet your needs and taste. Like the ready-made packages, eDesign will give you the design, but you will need to follow up to order the product and arrange any installations yourself.
$5,000 and up. In this price range, you can afford to have a more hands-off experience. If you're looking to spend $5,000, I highly suggest working with a professional to ensure you spend that money wisely. It can be as simple as employing a designer to go shopping with you for the day, paying for a design consultation, or investing in a complete design package including budget management and project management to oversee installation services and provide white-glove finishing touches.
